I have a mother and am the mother of two young women. My mother was a source of wisdom and peace. I hope to be that for my girls and want them to know I won’t mother them in the same way I did years ago but they are always free to call, as I did my mother, and talk out things in their lives.
In the book “Antique Dreams” Patreece’s grandmother was a marvelous source of wisdom and peace in her life. The relationships in Antique dreams are beautiful, enviable even!! The story began to grow in a way that I had not planned but I feel the lives of important women in my life began to speak in my story.
When I was in high school someone asked me who was my hero. I couldn’t answer. I was a teen, of course I saw flaws in my mom. I didn’t see anyone else that I thought was good enough to merit hero status in my eyes. Whether because I was too independent, too proud or too much a perfectionist I can’t say. Perhaps it was a combination of all of these things.
This question has stayed with me for many years. Most likely because it points out flaws in me. Through this question I have learned. I have learned to see the good in people, even if there are things that are not as good. I’ve learned to not think myself better than another because I no longer think I have things all figured out. (Oh to be as smart as a teenager thinks they are!) and I am in the process of learning to be less independent by letting people see me, the real me and letting them get closer. (Perhaps a result of moving too much throughout my lifetime.)
Now it is my hope to learn from my own story. To be to someone what Patreece’s grandmother was to her. To cultivate friendships that encourage growth and thought even through generations.
It is my wish for all young women that they are willing to reach to older wiser women for advice and strength. It is also my wish that more mature women never stop growing, learning and having fun.
And finally, it is my wish that you enjoy this book. I believe you will.
