I decided to make Corpus Christi the setting of my book, Antique Dreams, because I like the idea of being of still living in Texas but having the semi-tropical weather of the southern coast. I have been through Corpus a few times but I have to admit I’ve not spent much time there. With this city of a little over a quarter of a million being in the news due to Hurricane Harvey recently I thought I must designate today's blog to this unique city.
Many may already be aware that the name itself gives this city a unique blessing; Corpus Christi: Latin for The Body of Christ. The name was given to the area by a Spanish explorer more than 400 years ago but the city became incorporated in 1852 and took the name. It is the sixth largest port in the nation with a variety of businesses.
One of the things I think is beautiful, besides the semi-tropical weather, is the variety of people that constitute this city of more than a quarter of a million people. Of course I also love palm trees and the blending of blue water and green plants.
It is my hope and prayer that this city is blessed and grows even stronger after Harvey’s attempt at destruction. I may have never called Corpus Christi my home but in my heart it is special after many hours of research, thought and prayer about my characters and story in this special city.
