Life!

It’s what happens while you are surviving. We took a vacation to the Dominican Republic a couple of weeks ago. Risky, I know, during hurricane season. After we arrived we realized Irma could be an issue but we felt certain that we would fly out on our regularly scheduled flight on Wednesday the 6th thereby personally avoiding any dangers of Irma.

Alas, our airline was over cautious and canceled all flights on Wednesday even though Irma was not to reach the Island until Thursday morning. After losing many hours one day working on flights and hotel arrangements, we were able to get back to relaxing. Though the new state of relaxing wasn’t quite the same as there was a small worry in the back of our minds; worry that we need to prepare for the upcoming storm.

However, as we worried, though we tried not to, we were stealing a relaxing time from ourselves. Life, the relaxing life we had purchased for the week, was passing us by.

I’m not sure what the moral of this tale is. It is good to be concerned and prepared when faced with upcoming storms of any kind. But at what point do you let go the worry and relax to enjoy the ride?

For me personally, I’ve gotten much better at this with age. Perhaps because I’ve realized that no matter what one plans and prepares for things can still happen and only pride in self can convince you, you can control all things. I do know that with age I’ve begun to realize I don’t have everything figured out and that it is okay. I worry less, feel the need to control less, give it to God more and enjoy much more!
